The questions Austin homeowners ask most before installing a home EV charger — cost, the Austin Energy rebate, permits, panels, and Tesla. Don’t see yours? Ask us directly.

Cost & rebate
How much does it cost to install an EV charger in Austin?
Most Level 2 installs run $500–$2,000 before any rebate, driven by the distance from your panel, wall access, and whether your panel has capacity. If Austin Energy is your utility and your charger qualifies, its rebate returns up to $500 on the charger itself. Estimate yours with the calculator.
How much is the Austin Energy rebate and how do I get it?
If Austin Energy is your utility, it rebates 50% of the charging station’s purchase price, up to $500, for a Power Partner EV-compatible charger — you enroll in Power Partner EV and apply online after installation. It covers the charger, not the installation labor. Full rebate guide.
Does the rebate apply to my address?
Only if Austin Energy is your electric utility. Many suburban “Austin” addresses are served by Oncor or Pedernales (PEC), which run separate programs. Tell us your address and we’ll help you confirm before you spend anything.
Permits & requirements
Do I need a permit to install a home EV charger in Austin?
A hardwired Level 2 charger generally requires a City of Austin electrical permit and inspection under local code; the licensed contractor we match you with pulls the permit and schedules the inspection. Plug-in NEMA 14-50 units have lighter requirements.
Can I install an EV charger myself?
A 240V circuit is serious work. Hardwired installs require a permit and inspection under local code, and the Austin Energy rebate requires a code-compliant, UL-listed install — so most homeowners hire a licensed pro.
Panels & electrical
Do I need a panel upgrade for a Level 2 charger?
Not always. Many Austin homes have spare capacity for a 40–60A circuit. Older homes on 100A service may need a panel upgrade or a load-management device. Your installer runs a load calculation before quoting so there are no surprises.
How long does installation take?
Most Level 2 installs are done in 2–4 hours. Panel upgrades or long conduit runs can take a full day. Permitting and inspection are scheduled around the install.
Tesla & chargers
Can you install a Tesla Wall Connector?
Yes — the contractors we work with install the Wall Connector, Mobile Connector outlets, and power sharing for multiple Teslas, among the most common Austin installs. More on Tesla installs.
Which EV charger brands can be installed?
Any UL/ETL/cETL-listed Level 2 charger — Tesla, Wallbox, ChargePoint, Grizzl-E, Emporia, Enphase and more. A listed unit is also an Austin Energy rebate requirement.
Hardwired or plug-in — which should I get?
Plug-in (NEMA 14-50) is flexible and a bit cheaper; hardwired charges faster, looks cleaner, and is better for outdoor mounts. Your installer recommends based on your panel and parking.
