Austin EV Charger Installation FAQ

The questions Austin homeowners ask most before installing a home EV charger — cost, the Austin Energy rebate, permits, panels, and Tesla. Don’t see yours? Ask us directly.

Cost & rebate

How much does it cost to install an EV charger in Austin?

Most Level 2 installs run $500–$2,000 before the rebate, driven by the distance from your panel, wall access, and whether your panel has capacity. The Austin Energy rebate covers 50% up to $1,200, so net cost is often roughly half. Estimate yours with the calculator.

How much is the Austin Energy rebate and how do I get it?

Austin Energy refunds 50% of the total cost to buy and install a qualified Level 2 charger — up to $1,200 if your charger and vehicle are Power Partner compatible, or $900 if not. You need a licensed electrician and, for hardwired units, a City of Austin permit and inspection. Full rebate guide.

Does the rebate apply to my address?

Only if Austin Energy is your electric utility. Many suburban “Austin” addresses are served by Oncor or Pedernales (PEC), which run separate programs. Tell us your address and we’ll confirm before you spend anything.

Permits & requirements

Do I need a permit to install a home EV charger in Austin?

Hardwired Level 2 chargers require a City of Austin electrical permit and inspection. Plug-in units (NEMA 14-50) have lighter requirements, but a licensed electrician is still required to qualify for the Austin Energy rebate. We pull the permit and schedule the inspection as part of the job.

Can I install an EV charger myself?

A 240V circuit is serious work, and a DIY or unlicensed install voids the Austin Energy rebate — which requires a licensed electrician on the application. Between the rebate and the safety/code requirements, a professional install almost always comes out ahead.

Panels & electrical

Do I need a panel upgrade for a Level 2 charger?

Not always. Many Austin homes have spare capacity for a 40–60A circuit. Older homes on 100A service may need a panel upgrade or a load-management device. We run a load calculation before quoting so there are no surprises.

How long does installation take?

Most Level 2 installs are done in 2–4 hours. Panel upgrades or long conduit runs can take a full day. Permitting and inspection are scheduled around the install.

Tesla & chargers

Can you install a Tesla Wall Connector?

Yes — Wall Connector, Mobile Connector outlets, and power sharing for multiple Teslas are among our most common Austin installs. More on Tesla installs.

Which EV charger brands do you install?

Any UL/ETL/cETL-listed Level 2 charger — Tesla, Wallbox, ChargePoint, Grizzl-E, Emporia, Enphase and more. Using a listed unit is also a rebate requirement, so we’ll steer you toward one that qualifies.

Hardwired or plug-in — which should I get?

Plug-in (NEMA 14-50) is flexible and a bit cheaper; hardwired charges faster, looks cleaner, and is better for outdoor mounts. Both qualify for the rebate with a licensed install. We’ll recommend based on your panel and parking.
