How much is the Austin Energy EV charger rebate?
The rebate covers 50% of the total cost to purchase and install a qualified Level 2 (240V) home charging station, capped at:
- Up to $1,200 — if your charger and vehicle are Power Partner℠ EV compatible and enrolled.
- Up to $900 — for chargers or vehicles that aren’t Power Partner compatible.
That $300 gap is the single most overlooked part of the program. Power Partner enrollment is optional and free — it lets Austin Energy briefly adjust your charging during peak grid demand in exchange for the higher rebate tier. If your charger is on the compatible list, there’s rarely a reason not to take the extra $300.
Who qualifies?
- You receive electricity from Austin Energy (this is the big one — see the utility section below).
- You own or lease a plug-in electric vehicle.
- You install a new Level 2 (240V) charging station that is UL, ETL, or cETL listed.
- Installation is performed by a licensed Texas electrician.
- For hardwired chargers, you obtain a City of Austin electrical permit and pass inspection.
- One rebate per vehicle lease or purchase — no stacking two rebates at one address for two EVs.
The three requirements that get rebates denied
Austin Energy doesn’t reject rebates because the program is stingy — it rejects them on technicalities. The three that matter:
- A licensed electrician. A DIY install or an unlicensed handyman voids the rebate, even if the work is fine. The license number goes on the application.
- The permit and inspection (hardwired). Hardwired units need a City of Austin electrical permit pulled before work and an inspection after. Plug-in NEMA 14-50 units have lighter requirements but still need a licensed installer for the rebate.
- A listed charger. The station must be UL, ETL, or cETL listed and new. A used unit or an off-brand import without listing won’t qualify.
We handle all three as part of every install — the license, the permit, the inspection scheduling, and the rebate paperwork — so the money actually arrives.
Does the rebate cover my address? Austin Energy vs. Oncor vs. PEC
The Austin Energy rebate only applies if Austin Energy is your electric utility. Plenty of “Austin” addresses aren’t on Austin Energy:
- Austin Energy — most of the City of Austin proper.
- Oncor — parts of the northern and eastern suburbs.
- Pedernales Electric (PEC) — much of the Hill Country ring: Dripping Springs, parts of Lakeway, Bee Cave, Leander, Cedar Park.
Oncor and PEC run their own EV programs with different terms. Tell us your address and we’ll confirm which utility serves you and which rebate you’re eligible for before you spend a dollar. [VERIFY per-suburb utility territory before publishing claims for each suburb page.]
How to claim the rebate, step by step
- Confirm your utility is Austin Energy.
- Pick a qualifying charger — UL/ETL-listed, ideally Power Partner compatible for the $1,200 tier.
- Have it installed by a licensed electrician, with a City of Austin permit if hardwired.
- Pass inspection.
- Submit the rebate application with your itemized receipt, the electrician’s license number, permit/inspection records, and proof of EV ownership.
- Enroll in Power Partner (if compatible) to lock the higher tier.
We prep the documentation packet so step five is a five-minute upload, not a denial.
Is the rebate still funded?
The program is funded on a first-come, first-served basis. As of June 2026 it remains active. Because terms and funding can change, we re-verify the current amounts and rules before every quote — and we keep this page updated. Rebate FAQ
Can I get the rebate if I install the charger myself?
No. Austin Energy requires a licensed Texas electrician. A DIY install disqualifies the rebate regardless of work quality.
Do I need a permit for a plug-in charger?
Hardwired Level 2 chargers require a City of Austin electrical permit and inspection. Plug-in units have lighter requirements, but a licensed installer is still required for the rebate.
What’s the difference between the $900 and $1,200 rebate?
The $1,200 tier requires a Power Partner-compatible charger and vehicle with enrollment. Non-compatible setups cap at $900. Enrollment is free.
Does the rebate apply outside Austin Energy territory?
No. If Oncor or PEC is your utility, you’ll use their separate programs. We confirm your territory before quoting.
