What is a Level 2 charger — and why you want one in Austin

A Level 2 charger runs on a 240V circuit, the same voltage as your dryer or oven, and adds roughly 25–35 miles of range per hour. Level 1 — the cord that came with the car, plugged into a standard 120V outlet — adds 3–4 miles per hour. In Austin’s commute reality, Level 1 simply can’t keep up with a daily driver. Level 2 means you plug in at night and wake up full, every morning.

Hardwired vs. plug-in (NEMA 14-50)

Both qualify for the rebate with a licensed install. The right call depends on your situation:

  • Hardwired — the charger is wired directly to the circuit. Faster (up to 48–80A depending on unit), weatherproof, cleanest look, required for the highest charge rates. Needs a City of Austin permit and inspection.
  • Plug-in (NEMA 14-50) — the charger plugs into a 240V outlet. More flexible if you move or upgrade, slightly lower cost, capped around 40A. Popular for renters and lighter daily needs.

Which Level 2 charger should you buy?

Any UL, ETL, or cETL-listed unit qualifies for the Austin Energy rebate. For the top $1,200 tier, the charger should be Power Partner℠ compatible. Common picks we install in Austin:

  • Tesla Wall Connector — best for Tesla owners, Power Partner compatible.
  • Wallbox Pulsar Plus — compact, app-controlled, strong all-rounder.
  • ChargePoint Home Flex — adjustable amperage, widely supported.
  • Emporia / Enphase — value and solar-integration options.

Bought your charger already? We’ll install it. Haven’t yet? We’ll point you at one that hits the rebate tier and matches your car. See rebate eligibility details →

Do you need a panel upgrade?

A Level 2 circuit pulls 40–60A. Many Austin homes have the capacity; older homes on 100A service may not. We run a load calculation first — sometimes the answer is a load-management device instead of a full panel upgrade, which saves you money. Panel upgrades for EV charging →

Level 2 charger FAQ

How much does Level 2 installation cost in Austin?

Typically $500–$2,000 before the rebate, driven mostly by the distance from your panel and whether walls need to be opened. The Austin Energy rebate covers 50% up to $1,200.

Can I use my dryer outlet?

Sometimes, but it’s rarely ideal — sharing the circuit limits charge speed and can trip breakers. We usually recommend a dedicated circuit, which also keeps the rebate clean.

Hardwired or plug-in for the rebate?

Both qualify. Hardwired needs a permit and inspection; plug-in still needs a licensed installer. We’ll recommend based on your charge-speed needs.

How long does it take?

Most Level 2 installs are 2–4 hours. Panel work or long runs can extend to a full day.
